Qualified Accountants

Chartered and Certified accountants work alongside each other at Waterworths in a variety of roles from being in charge of a small audit to managing a department. Some joined Waterworths as students and others have been recruited from other local, national and international practices. Most of our qualified accountants work in the Corporate Services Department and enjoy a varied workload, such as:

Being in charge of an audit
Preparing business plans and cash flow forecasts
Preparing corporation tax computations
Preparing management accounts

Many of our Corporate Service Department clients have December and March year-ends, so some overtime is worked in the period from February to August. All qualified accountants receive assistance with meeting their obligation under continuing professional development (CPD), which includes attending audit and taxation update courses twice a year. Because our audits are paperless, all accountants in the Corporate Service Department are provided with a lap-top computer and are expected to use Microsoft Word and Excel, particularly to generate audit and accounting working papers. Being paperless, we also use portable scanners to record original documents, such as invoices and inward correspondence.

Everyone has email to desk and specialist software is also used -

- for preparing statutory and management accounts
- to check accounting disclosure
- to generate our audit programmes and control the paperless audit process
- for preparing tax returns for individuals
- for preparing P11D’s
- for preparing corporation tax computations
- for straightforward cash flow forecasts (we use Excel if a bespoke forecast is required)

Accounting Technicians (AAT)
Waterworths train many people with A levels (or similar), as accounting technicians. Numeracy and an ability to communicate are important skills. Accounting technicians are given day release to attend Blackburn College and further study time is given for end of course examinations, where appropriate. Accounting Technicians can expect to be in charge of the audits of smaller companies or can specialise in the preparation of accounts of smaller companies and unincorporated businesses. All AAT qualified staff are encouraged to study further, to become Certified or Chartered Accountants.

Student Accountants (ACA and ACCA)
Waterworths is an approved training office, with students studying for ACA, ACCA and AAT qualifications. Our Chartered students normally join us having gained a university degree - a 2:1 or better - the degree subject is largely unimportant. Our Certified students often join us with A levels, initially studying for an AAT qualification. All students attend training courses at Financial Training in Manchester, where full financial support is given for the student's first attempt at each exam. All students are expected to be numerate, computer literate and possess good communication skills.

Secretarial and Administration
All of our secretaries work with Microsoft Word. Beyond general clerical work, our secretaries assist in the running of client seminars, answering the telephone; in fact they do anything to aid the smooth running of our offices.

Other specialist roles
Tax Specialists, Customs & Excise Inspectors, Payroll Managers and Trust Administrators. Additional information about these roles is beyond the scope of this web-site.

Working arrangements
Our normal office hours are from 9.00am to 5.30pm with an hour for lunch at 1.00pm. We operate limited flexi-time, enabling you to start and finish a little earlier than normal. These arrangements apply when working in our offices; when we work at a client's premises we observe their working hours.

We have some car parking for staff although there is space in the town centre on a paying basis and also some free road-side parking.

We are Investors in People and are committed to training. All members of Waterworths take part in a twice-yearly Professional Development Review, to assess future training needs and develop a personal action plan.

All departments hold departmental meetings on a regular basis to discuss a wide rang of technical and administrative matters.

When you join Waterworths you go through a complete induction process designed to make you feel part of the team from day one. An existing member of staff is also allocated to you on your first day at Waterworths to answer any questions you might have and to introduce you to any of our software that might be unfamiliar.

We respect your rights but would point out that for many years we have been a non-smoking office.

Recruitment checklist
The following checklist is based on our interview experience. If the recruitment process is to run smoothly, please make sure you have considered the following:

Have you considered how your current employer is likely to react to you handing in your notice?

On handing in your notice, some employers will wish you to leave immediately. Some will ask you serve a longer notice period than is specified in your contract of employment, enabling you to tie up any loose ends. Some will entice you to stay by offering improved terms, such as promotion, extra money or more interesting work. Make sure you are prepared for all possible outcomes.

Are you happy with the journey from your home to our offices?
Remember you will be travelling in all weathers and at rush hour.

References
We always ask for two references. One from your current employer. The other can be a previous employer or a long standing acquaintance. Any offer of employment is conditional on receiving satisfactory references.
